Malaysia's first batch of SSME graduates
AvantiKumar | Sept. 27, 2011
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and IBM deliver Malaysia's first group of students of the MBA in Service Science, Management and
Engineering programme.
Malaysia's Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and technology giant IBM have delivered Malaysia's first group of students in a special MBA [Master of Business Administration] programme, launched in 2009, to help meet industry demands for engineering, management and service science skills.
The first batch of 12 students have graduated from the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) programme, said USM dean of the graduate school of business, Prof. Datin Dr. Hasnah Haron, speaking on 26 September 2011.
"The SSME [www.gsb.usm.my] is a new academic discipline designed to produce students with combined business, technology and social sciences skills needed in today's workforce," said Prof Dr Hashna. "The programme is the collaborative effort of the Graduate School of Business, USM and IBM. It incorporates four major areas, namely service science, system, management and engineering. Graduates are trained in multi-disciplinary areas that are aimed at enhancing their professionalism and enabling them to lead their organisations towards success."
She said that USM and IBM officially announced the first of such collaboration in Malaysia and the availability of an MBA in SSME programme in
2009. Since then, a total of 77 students have signed up for the programme. "The first batch of 12 graduates, comprising working adults - xecutives, managers and business owners - has since returned to the workforce with enhanced skills as mid- and top-level management."
Tailor-made for business curriculum
"We are thankful to IBM for their assistance in mooting the idea of offering SSME to business students," said Prof. Dr Hasnah. "Although the focus remains the same, that is, to increase the value of the service sector, the Graduate Business School has tailor-made the MBA SSME to meet the needs of the business curriculum. IBM has been supportive in providing the latest updates on the information technology related courses of the curriculum such as business intelligence, technology management and innovation."
"In today's globalised world where mature economies are largely services oriented, Malaysia needs to power its services sector to sharpen its competitive edge," said IBM Malaysia marketing director, Eric Wong. "The MBA SSME programme effectively nurtures a special kind of T-shape professional, with deep skills in a specialty and sufficient understanding of a broad range of related disciplines, who can stand out in today's highly competitive world, where skills and competencies need to be continually enhanced."
